The Easter Vigil

A dark church. One candle. Then everything.

In short. At the Easter Vigil the Church blesses the baptismal water, and adults usually receive Baptism, Confirmation and first Communion in one celebration.1,2 The Eucharist completes Christian initiation.3

Key points

  • For adults, initiation culminates in a single celebration of three sacraments.2
  • Baptism forgives all sins and makes you a new creation.4
  • The Eucharist completes Christian initiation.3

Try this, this week

  1. Read Romans 6:3-11.
  2. Go to an Easter Vigil this year as a guest, even before you’re ready.
  3. Ask your sponsor what their first Communion was like.

“We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.”

Romans 6:4, World English Bible
