Hebrews 5
World English Bible, Catholic edition, in plain modern English. About the translations
Douay-Rheims Bible, Challoner revision, the traditional Catholic English Bible. About the translations
1 For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. CCC
2 The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness. CCC
3 Because of this, he must offer sacrifices for sins for the people, as well as for himself. CCC
4 Nobody takes this honor on himself, but he is called by God, just like Aaron was. CCC
5 So also Christ didn’t glorify himself to be made a high priest, but it was he who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your father.” CCC
6 As he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” CCC
7 He, in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear, CCC
8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered. CCC
9 Having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of eternal salvation, CCC
10 named by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. CCC
11 About him we have many words to say, and hard to interpret, seeing you have become dull of hearing.
12 For although by this time you should be teachers, you again need to have someone teach you the rudiments of the first principles of the revelations of God. You have come to need milk, and not solid food.
13 For everyone who lives on milk is not experienced in the word of righteousness, for he is a baby.
14 But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.
1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God, that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins: CCC
2 Who can have compassion on them that are ignorant and that err: because he himself also is compassed with infirmity. CCC
3 And therefore he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. CCC
4 Neither doth any man take the honour to himself, but he that is called by God, as Aaron was. CCC
5 So Christ also did not glorify himself, that he might be made a high priest: but he that said unto him: Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee. CCC
6 As he saith also in another place: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech. CCC
7 Who in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offering up prayers and supplications to him that was able to save him from death, was heard for his reverence. CCC
8 And whereas indeed he was the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things which he suffered. CCC
9 And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation: CCC
10 Called by God a high priest, according to the order of Melchisedech. CCC
11 Of whom we have much to say and hard to be intelligibly uttered: because you are become weak to hear.
12 For whereas for the time you ought to be masters, you have need to be taught again what are the first elements of the words of God: and you are become such as have need of milk and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that is a partaker of milk is unskilful in the word of justice: for he is a little child.
14 But strong meat is for the perfect: for them who by custom have their senses exercised to the discerning of good and evil.
