The answer, in writing

Church teaching

The grace of the Holy Spirit justifies us: it cleanses us from sin and gives us “the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ” and through Baptism. CCC 1987

Justification was merited for us by Christ’s Passion and is given in Baptism, the sacrament of faith. CCC 1992

It comes from God’s grace, His free and undeserved help. CCC 1996

Our words

Jesus does the saving. We say yes to Him, and keep saying yes, and that yes shows up in how we love.
