Jean de Brébeuf lived among the Huron for years, learned their language and wrote a catechism in it.1

Isaac Jogues was captured by the Mohawk, tortured and mutilated, and escaped to France.1

He went back.

Eight martyrs

Jogues was killed in 1646 near what is now Auriesville, New York, with the lay missionary Jean de Lalande.1

Brébeuf was tortured to death in 1649, along with others, eight martyrs in all.1
