Romans 5
World English Bible, Catholic edition, in plain modern English. About the translations
Douay-Rheims Bible, Challoner revision, the traditional Catholic English Bible. About the translations
1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;
2 through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; CCC
4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; CCC
5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. CCC
6 For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Fathers
7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a good person someone would even dare to die.
8 But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. CCC
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God’s wrath through him.
10 For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life. CCC
11 Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
12 Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death passed to all men because all sinned. CCC
13 For until the law, sin was in the world; but sin is not charged when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come. Fathers
15 But the free gift isn’t like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
16 The gift is not as through one who sinned; for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift followed many trespasses to justification.
17 For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ.
18 So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life. CCC
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous. CCC · Fathers
20 The law came in that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly, CCC · Fathers
21 that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CCC
1 Being justified therefore by faith, let us have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2 By whom also we have access through faith into this grace wherein we stand: and glory in the hope of the glory of the sons of God.
3 And not only so: but we glory also in tribulations, knowing that tribulation worketh patience; CCC
4 And patience trial; and trial hope; CCC
5 And hope confoundeth not: because the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost who is given to us. CCC
6 For why did Christ, when as yet we were weak, according to the time, die for the ungodly? Fathers
7 For scarce for a just man will one die: yet perhaps for a good man some one would dare to die.
8 But God commendeth his charity towards us: because when as yet we were sinners according to the time. CCC
9 Christ died for us. Much more therefore, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from wrath through him.
10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son: much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. CCC
11 And not only so: but also we glory in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received reconciliation.
12 Wherefore as by one man sin entered into this world and by sin death: and so death passed upon all men, in whom all have sinned. CCC
13 For until the law sin was in the world: but sin was not imputed, when the law was not.
14 But death reigned from Adam unto Moses, even over them also who have not sinned, after the similitude of the transgression of Adam, who is a figure of him who was to come. Fathers
15 But not as the offence, so also the gift. For if by the offence of one, many died: much more the grace of God and the gift, by the grace of one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16 And not as it was by one sin, so also is the gift. For judgment indeed was by one unto condemnation: but grace is of many offences unto justification.
17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned through one; much more they who receive abundance of grace and of the gift and of justice shall reign in life through one, Jesus Christ.
18 Therefore, as by the offence of one, unto all men to condemnation: so also by the justice of one, unto all men to justification of life. CCC
19 For as by the disobedience of one man, many were made sinners: so also by the obedience of one, many shall be made just. CCC · Fathers
20 Now the law entered in that sin might abound. And where sin abounded, grace did more abound. CCC · Fathers
21 That as sin hath reigned to death: so also grace might reign by justice unto life everlasting, through Jesus Christ our Lord. CCC
