The Catechism says the Gospel was handed on in two ways: orally by the apostles, and in writing by the apostles and others associated with them. CCC 76

The apostles left bishops as their successors so that the living Gospel would always be preserved. CCC 77

Our words

The New Testament was written inside a Church that was already preaching, baptizing and breaking bread. The Church didn’t come from the book; the book came from the Church.
