The hardest questions, head on.

Eight objections to belief, stated as a serious skeptic would state them, each with the strongest Catholic reply and its sources.

Is there a God at all?

Answered on video by Catholic Answers · Full answer page

The strongest objection

Science explains more every decade without needing God. Every argument for God has a famous rebuttal, and the burden of proof is on the one making the claim. If there were a God, it should not be this hard to tell.

The strongest reply

The Church holds that God can be known with certainty from the created world by the natural light of human reason. CCC 36 Its arguments start not from gaps in science but from why anything exists and changes at all. CCC 31 CCC 32

Why does God allow suffering?

Answered on video by Bishop Robert Barron · Full answer page

The strongest objection

Children get cancer. An all-good, all-powerful God would stop it. Either He cannot, or He will not, and either way He is not the God Christians describe.

The strongest reply

The Church says no quick answer will suffice, and that only the Christian faith as a whole answers it. CCC 309 God permits evil out of respect for freedom and can bring good out of it, and He entered suffering Himself on the cross. CCC 311 CCC 312

Why is God so hidden?

Answered on video by Catholic Answers · Full answer page

The strongest objection

If God wanted a relationship with everyone, He would make Himself obvious. Many sincere seekers find nothing. Silence from heaven looks exactly like what we would expect if no one is there.

The strongest reply

The Church teaches that God tirelessly calls each person, even one who hides from His face or accuses Him of abandonment. CCC 2567 Faith is a free response, and nobody is forced to embrace it. CCC 160

Don’t miracles break the laws of nature?

Answered on video by Catholic Answers · Full answer page

The strongest objection

Every age has its miracle stories, and they shrink as investigation improves. A law of nature is our best evidence of how things always go, so a miracle report is always less likely than error or legend.

The strongest reply

The Church teaches that Jesus’ signs attest that the Father sent Him and invite belief, yet can also be an occasion of offense. CCC 548 It treats miracles as motives of credibility that make faith reasonable, not as proofs that force it. CCC 156

Did Jesus really rise from the dead?

Answered on video by Bishop Robert Barron · Full answer page

The strongest objection

Dead men stay dead. Grieving followers have visions, stories grow in the telling, and the earliest Gospel ends abruptly at an empty tomb. A legend is always more probable than a resurrection.

The strongest reply

The Church calls the Resurrection a real event with manifestations that were historically verified, noting Paul’s list of witnesses written around AD 56. CCC 639 It points to the disciples’ faith being drastically tested by the Passion, so they weren’t primed to invent it. CCC 643

Can we trust the Gospels?

Answered on video by Catholic Answers · Full answer page

The strongest objection

The Gospels were written decades later by believers, not neutral reporters. They disagree on details and were copied by hand for centuries. Why treat them as history at all?

The strongest reply

The Church distinguishes three stages in the formation of the Gospels and unhesitatingly affirms their historicity: they faithfully hand on what Jesus really did and taught. CCC 126

Why should one religion be right?

Answered on video by Ascension Presents · Full answer page

The strongest objection

If you had been born in Delhi or Riyadh you would believe something else. Thousands of religions each claim to be true. It is arrogant to think yours is the one.

The strongest reply

The Church recognizes goodness and truth in other religions as a preparation for the Gospel. CCC 843 It teaches that those who, through no fault of their own, don’t know Christ but seek God sincerely may be saved, while still proclaiming Christ. CCC 847 CCC 848

Why trust a Church with so many scandals?

Answered on video by Bishop Robert Barron · Full answer page

The strongest objection

Abuse by priests, cover-ups by bishops, crusades and inquisitions. An institution that claims to speak for God has repeatedly behaved worse than many secular ones. Its own record refutes its claims.

The strongest reply

The Church calls herself at once holy and always in need of purification, and says all her members, ministers included, must acknowledge that they are sinners. CCC 827 It teaches that scandal is gravest when caused by those with authority. CCC 2285
