What we share
The Catholic Church teaches that all who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ, have a right to be called Christians, and are accepted as brothers and sisters in the Lord. CCC 818 Baptism is the foundation of communion among all Christians. CCC 1271
The Bible and Tradition
Catholics and Protestants agree all Scripture is inspired. CCC 105 Catholics hold that Scripture and apostolic Tradition flow from one source, and that the Church discerned which books belong in the Bible. CCC 80 CCC 120
Faith and works
Catholics agree with Paul: justification is a free gift of grace that nobody earns. CCC 1996 CCC 2010 The disagreement is about living faith: Catholics read Paul and James together, faith working through love. Galatians 5:6 CCC 1815
The Lord’s Supper
Jesus said the bread He gives is His flesh, and many walked away rather than accept it. John 6:51 The Church teaches Christ is truly, really and substantially present in the Eucharist. CCC 1374
Peter and the pope
Jesus gave Peter the keys and told him to feed His sheep. Matthew 16:19 John 21:17 The Church teaches this office continues in the bishop of Rome, with infallibility limited to definitive teaching on faith and morals. CCC 881 CCC 891
Mary: honored, not worshiped
Adoration is due to God alone. CCC 2132 The Church honors Mary with a special devotion that, in its own words, “differs essentially from the adoration which is given to the incarnate Word and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit.” CCC 971
The saints, and asking for prayers
The Church believes in the communion of saints: the faithful on earth, those being purified, and the blessed in heaven together form one Church. CCC 962 The saints in heaven do not cease to intercede with the Father for us, through the one mediator, Christ Jesus. CCC 956
Coffee and next steps
The Church calls baptized Protestants brothers and sisters in the Lord. CCC 818 A next step can be small: one Mass, one coffee with a priest; and a valid baptism is never repeated. CCC 1272
