Why “Mother of God”?

In short: Because her Son is the eternal Son of God. The title is really a claim about Jesus, not a promotion for Mary. CCC 495
The answer, in writing
Elizabeth already calls Mary “the mother of my Lord,” before Jesus is born. CCC 495
The One Mary conceived was none other than the Father’s eternal Son, the second Person of the Trinity, so the Church confesses that she is truly Mother of God. CCC 495
This title is really about Jesus. If He’s God, then the woman who gave birth to Him is His mother. It doesn’t mean she came before God; it means God came that close to us.
